GOD THE FATHER

“These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: … And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” John 17:1-3

Jesus said the only true God is the person whom He called “Father” in John 17:1 and to know the Father and His Son Jesus Christ “is life eternal”. The apostle John states:

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, [even] in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 1John 5:20

This text harmonizes with John 17:3. The true God is not the trinity,  it is the being called THE FATHER whom Christ came to reveal to this fallen world. He came to reveal the love that God the Father had for his created beings who had lost their way. What did Christ come to reveal?

For God (the Father) so loved the world, that he (the Father) gave his (the Father’s) only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God (the Father) sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son [to be] the Saviour of the world. John 3:16,17. 1John 4:14

  “Our heavenly Father is in living connection with humanity. If there be one in the universe whom we should respect, it is our Father in heaven, for He "so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  {2SAT 230.2}

“How can we understand God? How are we to know our Father? We are to call Him by the endearing name of Father. And how are we to know Him and the power of His love? It is through diligent search of the Scriptures. We cannot appreciate God unless we take into our souls the great plan of redemption. We want to know all about these grand problems of the soul, of the redemption of the fallen race. It is a wonderful thing that after man had violated the law of God and separated himself from God, was divorced, as it were, from God --that after all this there was a plan made whereby man should not perish, but that he should have everlasting life. . . . God gave His only-begotten Son to die for us. . . . When our minds are constantly dwelling upon the matchless love of God to the fallen race, we begin to know God, to become acquainted with Him. . . .  {HP 11.2}

This person, called the Father, the only true God, gave His only begotten Son to save you and I. The trinity has put its own spin on the word GOD and corrupted it. The apostle Paul puts it this way concerning the Father and His Son:

“But to us [there is but] one God, the Father, of whom [are] all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom [are] all things, and we by him. [There is] one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who [is] above all, and through all, and in you all.1Cor 8:6. Eph 4:4-6

Jesus was asked a most interesting question by one of the scribes. Note Christ’s answer, the scribes response and Jesus’ commendation:

“And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments [is], Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this [is] the first commandment. And the second [is] like, [namely] this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:” And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love [his] neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him [any question]. Mark 12:28-34

Jesus said to the Jews in John 8:54: “Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing:    it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:”

Notice:

1. Which is the first commandment of all?

2. The first of all the commandments [is], Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

3. ....thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:”

4. Jesus replied: Thou art not far from the kingdom of God.

5. Jesus said “…it is my Father that honoureth me;

6. He tells the Jews: my Father is the one “…of whom ye say, that he is your God:”

7. Jesus told them my Father is the one you call your God.

8. The Father is the person whom Jesus is referring to in Mark 12:28-34

9. The Father is the one, the scribe was alluding to in: “…there is none other but he”.

10. The Father of Jesus is the person who is described as the only true God.

Deuteronomy 6:4 is often misapplied to support the plurality of God. Not so in the above verses. Jesus said Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: The scribe commended Jesus for speaking the truth adding, “…for there is one God; and there is none other but he.” – singular friend not plural. Jesus tells them that the one you call your God is the person who is my Father.

This God of the Jews is identified by Jesus in John 8:54  as His “Father” “…of whom ye say, that he is your God:”, the same God that the scribe said “…there is none other but he”.   The scribe certainly did not believe in the plurality of God, else Jesus would have corrected him if that were the truth however, Christ said to him: “… Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. ...” Mark 12:34    The Father is “the only true God.” Am I saying that the Son is not God? Absolutely not! Jesus is Divine. Divine begats Divine, just as human begats human. The Son is the literal Son of the only true God.

Ellen White is in harmony with scripture. Note the following:

1. The infinite God, said Jesus, makes it your privilege to approach Him by the name of Father. Understand all that this implies. No earthly parent ever pleaded so earnestly with an erring child as He who made you pleads with the transgressor. No human, loving interest ever followed the impenitent with such tender invitations. God dwells in every abode; He hears every word that is spoken, listens to every prayer that is offered, tastes the sorrows and disappointments of every soul, regards the treatment given to father, mother, sister, friend, and neighbor. He cares for our necessities, and His love and mercy and grace are continually flowing to satisfy our need. The Signs of the Times - 10-28-03

2. We want the light of the glory of God to shine upon us. Paul says, "For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." It is the Father who "so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." "Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named." The family is named after the Father. Those who enter the heavenly mansions will have the name of the Father and the name of the city of God written in their foreheads. They will bear the divine superscription, and be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruptions that are in the world through lust. Advent Review and Sabbath Herald - 07-19-92

Who is it who so loved the world in John 3:16?  GOD. In the above testimony she makes the point that this word GOD is referring to the Father - “ It is the Father who "so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son,...” and not a trinity God!

3. How can we understand God? How are we to know our Father? We are to call Him by the endearing name of Father. And how are we to know Him and the power of His love? It is through diligent search of the Scriptures. We cannot appreciate God unless we take into our souls the great plan of redemption. We want to know all about these grand problems of the soul, of the redemption of the fallen race. It is a wonderful thing that after man had violated the law of God and separated himself from God, was divorced, as it were, from God--that after all this there was a plan made whereby man should not perish, but that he should have everlasting life. The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials -PG - 74

Notice how she interchangeably uses both the word GOD and Father in the above - ”How can we understand God? How are we to know our Father? We are to call Him by the endearing name of Father. And how are we to know Him and the power of His love?”  We cannot possibly read a trinitarian God into these statements. As mentioned previously this was the faith of our fathers and an established view. We must therefore understand her later statements in the light of these and not the other way around.

4. Before He left them, Christ gave His followers a positive promise that after His ascension He would send them the Holy Spirit. "Go ye therefore," He said, "and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father [a personal God] and of the Son [a personal Saviour], and of the Holy Ghost [sent from heaven to represent Christ]: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world" [Matt. 28:19, 20].  Manuscript Releases Volume Twelve -PG- 26

5. Those who have a true knowledge of God will not become so infatuated with the laws of matter or the operations of nature as to overlook, or refuse to acknowledge, the continual working of God in nature. Nature is not God, nor was it ever God. The voice of nature testifies of God, but nature is not God. As his created work, it simply bears a testimony to God's power. Deity is the author of nature. The natural world has, in itself, no power but that which God supplies. There is a personal God, the Father: there is a personal Christ, the Son. And "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in times past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high." Advent Review and Sabbath Herald - 03-17-04

“There is a personal God, the Father: there is a personal Christ, the Son.”  Where is the Spirit?

6. Now let us improve the precious opportunities to become acquainted with our heavenly Father, who "so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish. . . ." Wondrous love that God, the infinite God, has made it our privilege to approach Him by the name of Father! No earthly parent could plead more earnestly with an erring child than He who made us pleads with the transgressor. No human, loving interest has ever followed the impenitent with such tender invitations. . . .  {TMK 262.3}

7. God is the Father of Christ; Christ is the Son of God. To Christ               has been given an exalted position. He has been made equal with the Father. All the counsels of God are opened to His Son.  {8T 268.3}

8. The King of the universe summoned the heavenly host before Him, that in their presence He might set forth the true position of His Son, and show the relation He sustained to all created beings. . . . Before the assembled inhabitants of heaven the King declared that none but Christ, the Only Begotten of God, could fully enter into His purposes, and to Him it was committed to execute the mighty counsels of His will. --PP 36. {TA 32.3}

9 The great Creator assembled the heavenly host, that He might in the presence of all the angels confer special honor upon His Son. The Son was seated on the throne with the Father, and the heavenly throng of holy angels was gathered around them. The Father then made known that it was ordained by Himself that Christ, His Son, should be equal with Himself; so that wherever was the presence of His Son, it was as His own presence. The word of the Son was to be obeyed as readily as the word of the Father. His Son He had invested with authority to command the heavenly host. Especially was His Son to work in union with Himself in the anticipated creation of the earth. . . . {TA 32.4}
In Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well, we find Christ identifying His Father as the one worthy of worship.  Christ is telling the woman of the Samaritans’ and Jews’ misconceptions of God. God cannot be confined to this mountain or to Jerusalem for God is omnipresent via the operation of His Spirit and therefore can be worshipped anywhere in spirit and in truth.

The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth. John 4:19-24

Notice it is the Father who is identified as the God deserving of worship. – “the gift of God” in verse 10. Who is the “God” of verse 10? - the Father of verses 19-24.

Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. John 4:10

The scribe was not a Trinitarian, neither was Paul in all his salutations to the churches. The scriptures teach that there is “One God and Father of all, who [is] above all, and through all, and in you all.” Ephesians 4:6

And Jesus said in John 17:1-3:
These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

“The Ancient of Days is God the Father.  Says the psalmist: ‘Before the  mountains were brought forth, or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the  world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.’  Psalm 90:2.  It is He, the source of all being, and the fountain of all law, that is to preside in the judgment.” Great Controversy, 1911 p 479

Ellen White is definitely non-trinitarian. This person called God (“…thou art God.”), is the source of ALL being, the source of ALL life, the fountain of all law. Who is this person? HE is the BEING called the FATHER, the Ancient of Days, the only true God. The Trinity denies the Fatherhood of this BEING and the literal sonship of Jesus - see the section on the Antichrist.

Remember Jesus told the devil in Matt 4:10* “…. Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
